Your
itinerary is as follows:
Day 1 – 25 Apr/Fri – Board your overnight transatlantic flight
Day 2 – 26 Apr/Sat – Arrival in Lisbon, Portugal-Excursion to Sintra
and
Queluz
Upon arrival into Lisbon, claim your luggage and proceed through
customs. Your Tour Director will be waiting to greet you upon
exiting customs. Board your luxury motor coach and enjoy a short
drive west to Sintra*. First visit the PALACIO NACIONAL DA SINTRA;
perched on one of the highest points on the Serra, this palace was
built in the middle of the 19C by King Ferdinand II. After a
noontime break, we continue onto QUELUZ PALACE AND GARDENS; which
has not infrequently been compared with Versailles Palace. Late
afternoon return to Lisbon with time to rest and get settled into
your room. Tonight, join your Tour Director and fellow travelers for
a WELCOME DINNER BARBEQUE** with soft drinks. (BB,D)
Day 3 – 27 Apr/Sun – Lisbon
Lisbon was the center of Europe’s longest lived overseas empire.
Portugal’s imperial ambitions date back to Prince Henry the
Navigator’s 15th century discoveries in West Africa and
did not subside until the 1970’s. Guided sightseeing begins with
CASTELO DE SAO JORGE (Saint George Castle); a magical place, a
charming hilltop citadel with geese and ducks roaming around the
castle gardens. Once used as a fortress, today it is home to many
local families. Climb the towers and walk along the reconstructed
ramparts of the castle walls and wonder at the spectacular views
over Lisbon and the Tagus River. Next, the MUSEU NACIONAL DO
AZULEJO. View the collection, which virtually depicts the entire
history of the tile in Portugal; the highlights are the mannerist
retable of Nossa Senhorada Vida and the Lisbon panel, 23 meters
long, representing Lisbon before the 1755 earthquake. Our
*Sintra
sightseeing is contingent on the group arriving on the same early
morning flights into Lisbon.
**Terrace Barbeque is located in the Mundial Hotel. If we are
required to seek alternate accommodations, this dinner will be
revised.
The next stop is at CASA DO FADO E DA GUITARRA PORTUGUESA; your
guide will explain how this museum documents the history and
development
of the traditional music known as Fado. It includes audiovisual
displays, costumes and a wonderful collection of Portuguese
guitars. Our final tour of the day is MAE DE AGUA CONCESSIONS.
Hear first hand how the water concessions have affected daily life
in Portugal and other European countries. Time at leisure before
joining the NIGHT TOUR; treat yourself to a Portuguese dinner with
drinks at a typical restaurant. Enjoy after-dinner entertainment
with songs and dances, Fado-style. Unforgettable views of the
illuminated city finish your day with a flourish. (BB,D)
Day 4 – 28 Apr/Mon – Lisbon
Today is a treat as you have a day at the former grounds of “Expo
98”. The grounds were not left in abandonment and are now called
“NATIONAL PARK” (Parque das Nacoes). The park was built with the
general theme of “The oceans, a heritage for the future” and some
142 countries and international organizations participated. Reap
the benefits with your included CARTAO DO PARQUE; a card that
includes discounts or free admission to many of the parks locations.
End the day with a guided visit to ORIENTE STATION by Santiago
Calatrava. He was commissioned by the city of Lisbon in 1993, after
an invited competition. Its immediate goal was to serve the great
number of visitors expected for the World Expo in 1998. Dinner
tonight will be provided at your hotel. (BB,D)

the splendid park and manor of PALACIO DE MATEUS, whose picture
