Classical & World Languages

Thornton-Donovan teaches multiple world languages. At the Upper School level, languages are taught based on ability (e.g. experience studying the language) rather than grade level. Student exchange and sister school programs provide a good opportunity to put language skills to use.

ROMANCE LANGUAGES

SPANISH

In Spanish I, students develop a basic pronunciation of the Spanish Language and learn to express ideas, feelings, and exchange opinions. They are exposed to new vocabulary words, learn the correct usage of grammar, and the culture of the Spanish speaking countries around the world.

Spanish II is a continued introduction to the language and culture of the Spanish-speaking world. Students develop their communicative competence by interacting orally and in written messages in Spanish. They also develop their reading skills through various tales, poems and stories in Spanish.

Spanish III continues to develop and build upon the skills acquired in Spanish I and II. Students learn more advanced grammar concepts such as the subjunctive, future, conditional, and perfect tenses. A greater emphasis on oral and written assignments is also given.

ITALIAN
Initially, students work on comprehension of the language as well as improving in grammar, reading, writing, and speaking skills. More advanced students further master the language via continued grammar, reading, writing, and speaking.  They engage in learning more about famous Italian writers, artists, and etc.

FRENCH
Initially, French focuses on conversational vocabulary and basic grammar. Higher levels focus on targeted vocabulary and advanced grammar. Courses integrate culture, geography of French speaking countries as well as art, and poetry.

CLASSICAL LANGUAGES

LATIN

This is a nuts-and-bolts course in Latin as it existed during the Classical period. We use the restored pronunciation and offer participants a chance to compete in the Latin recitation contest sponsored by the New York City Classics club. The medium for instruction is a compendium of Greek myths based on Ovid's Metamorphoses.

ANCIENT GREEK
Offered based on interest.

EURASIAN LANGUAGES

RUSSIAN
This class is open to 6 through 12 grades depending on their ability.  This course, taught by a Ukrainian-born native speaker of Russian, is designed for beginners and for students who have already learned the fundamentals of Russian language.

JAPANESE
With the well-known Genki as a base text, we learn vocabulary, reading and writing (hiragana, katakana, and kanji), and also dive deep into Japanese grammar. Students are also exposed to Japanese culture through our exchange with Sera High School and through film.
